Quick answer

A modular sofa (also called a modular couch or modular sectional) is a sofa built from separate pieces (seats, corners, chaises, ottomans) that sit side by side instead of sharing one fixed frame. Move the pieces and the shape changes: one long sofa today, a daybed or two loveseats tomorrow. Each piece also travels on its own, so it gets through doors and up stairs more easily. See our modular sectionals.

How does a modular sofa work?

Each piece of a modular sofa is a small, finished sofa unit with its own base and cushions. You decide where each one goes, and the pieces together make the full sofa.

A regular sofa is built around one frame: the shape you buy is the shape you keep. A modular sofa splits that frame into units that stand on their own. That one design choice changes three things:

  • The shape is yours to change. Line the pieces up, turn one around, pull an ottoman out. The same sofa can become a long sofa, an L, a U or a daybed, depending on the pieces.
  • Delivery gets easier. Every piece ships in its own box, and a box is far easier to carry through a hallway than a full sofa.
  • Moving house gets easier too. The sofa leaves the way it came in: piece by piece.

That is the idea behind Lakely: one sofa, every layout. You can browse every model in our modular sectionals collection, each with a top view of its pieces.

What pieces make up a modular sofa?

Most modular sofas mix five kinds of pieces: middle seats, corners, arm seats, chaises and ottomans. The mix decides which layouts you can build.

The five common pieces, and what each one does
Piece What it is What it lets you do Lakely example
Middle seat A seat with a back and no arms Make the sofa longer, one seat at a time 2 middle seats in the 6-piece U-shaped sectional
Corner A square seat with a back on two sides Turn the line into an L or a U 2 corners in the same 6-piece U
Arm seat A seat with one arm at the end Close off each end of the sofa The two 2-seat sections of the Velvet Modular Sofa
Chaise A long seat for stretching your legs Add a lounge end to a sofa or an L Built by sliding an ottoman in front of a seat
Ottoman A loose cushioned block with no back Footrest, extra seat, chaise or coffee table 2 loose ottomans in the Boneless U-Shaped Sectional

Good to know: the ottoman is the most flexible piece of all. On several of our sofas it is what turns a straight sofa into an L, then into a footrest or an extra seat when guests come over. See them all in our sectionals with ottoman.

What can you build with one modular sofa?

It depends on the pieces in the box. Two arm sections already give you three layouts; add two loose ottomans and you get four.

Here are real layouts of two of our sofas. We only show layouts that are proven in photos or clearly described for that exact model, never "endless combinations".

Long and straightTwo 2-seat sections lined up into one long sofa, with an arm at each end.
Pushed into a daybedTurn one section around and push the two fronts together for a wide, deep lounging bed.
Two facing loveseatsSet the two sections face to face with a coffee table between them for long conversations.

The Velvet Modular Sofa, sections pushed together front to front: a daybed.

The Boneless U-Shaped Sectional goes further, because its two ottomans are loose. Line them along the front of the seats and the whole sectional becomes a 91.7 x 77.2 in lounging bed.

U for movie nightAn ottoman at each end turns the sofa into a cozy U where two people can stretch out.
Sofa bedPush both ottomans against the front of the seats and it turns into a wide lounging bed.
L with a long loungeLine both ottomans up on one side to build a long lounge end for lazy afternoon naps.
Extra seatsPull the two ottomans away from the sofa and use them as extra seats or footstools when guests come over.

How big is a modular sofa, and what does it cost?

Anywhere from a 75 in two-seater to a 145 in four-seater. At Lakely, modular sofas run from $1,099 to $2,499, with free delivery.

Because the pieces are separate, size is less about one fixed length and more about the footprint of each layout. Here are six of our modular sofas, from the smallest to the longest.

Modular sofa vs regular sofa vs fixed sectional

A fixed sectional gives you a big shape that never changes. A modular sofa gives you the big shape plus the option to change it, and smaller boxes on delivery day.

How the three compare
What matters Modular sofa Regular sofa Fixed sectional
How it is built Pieces that each stand on their own One frame 2 or 3 sections that go together one way
Change the shape later Yes, within the pieces you own No Rarely
Size of the biggest box One piece The whole sofa The biggest section
Narrow doors and stairs Much easier Often a problem Sometimes a problem
Moving to a new home Rearrange for the new room Same shape, maybe the wrong one Same shape

Not sure an L or a U suits your room? With a modular sofa you do not have to get it right forever on the first try. Our L-shaped sectionals show the plan of every model, so you can compare footprints before you choose.

Pros and cons of a modular sofa

The big wins are flexibility and easy delivery. The trade-offs are more seams between cushions and pieces that need something to hold them together.

Pros

  • One sofa, several rooms. Rearrange it when you move, when guests stay or when you simply want a change.
  • Easy to bring home. Every piece travels on its own. Our Velvet Modular Sofa ships in 2 boxes of 39.37 x 16.14 x 14.56 in.
  • Room to lounge. Pushed together, the pieces make the deep spots everyone fights for: a chaise, a daybed, a bed for movie night.
  • No assembly on many models. Several of our sofas just need unboxing and pushing together.

Cons

  • More seams. Where two pieces meet, you sit on a joint. A deep, thick cushion makes it far less noticeable.
  • Pieces can drift on smooth floors if there is no connection system. Check how each sofa connects before you buy.
  • Compressed sofas need time. Vacuum-packed foam needs from about 72 hours to 7 days to reach full size, depending on the model.

How do the pieces of a modular sofa stay together?

With a connection system, a grippy base, or simply their own weight. The best setups combine two of them.

  • Buckles, clips or straps lock two pieces side by side. Our Tufted Corduroy Loveseat with Ottoman uses a buckle connection.
  • An anti-slip base stops pieces from drifting on wood or tile. The same loveseat has one.
  • Weight and friction: heavy foam pieces pushed tight against each other tend to stay put on a rug.

Before you buy, check what each sofa page says about its connection. On a smooth floor, a rug under the sofa also helps a lot.

Who is a modular sofa for?

Anyone whose room, home or life changes: renters, people with narrow stairs, families who host, and small spaces that need to sleep a guest now and then.

Does a modular sofa work in a small room?

Yes, often better than a fixed sofa: you pick a compact layout for everyday life and open it up only when you need more seats or a bed.

  • Start small: a two-seat modular loveseat is about 75 to 82 in wide.
  • Split it: two sections can stand on two walls instead of one long run, like the two facing loveseats of the Velvet Modular Sofa.
  • Keep it low: the Chenille Compression Loveseat is only 24.8 in high, so the room looks bigger.
  • Make it a guest bed: the same loveseat folds flat into a floor bed.

See every compact model in our small space sofas.

How is a modular sofa delivered?

In several boxes, one or two pieces per box. Many modular sofas are also vacuum-compressed, which makes the boxes small enough for one or two people to carry.

Real box sizes of four Lakely modular sofas
Sofa Boxes Largest box Assembly
Velvet Modular Sofa, 120 in 2 39.37 x 16.14 x 14.56 in, 63.93 lb Compressed, unbox and let it expand

6-piece U-Shaped Sectional 6 32.5 x 30 x 9 in, 62 lb Flat boxes, 4.5 to 9 in thick

Box sizes matter more than the sofa size when your entry is tight. Every sofa page lists its boxes; you will also find all our compressed models in sofas in a box.

How to choose a modular sofa: 5 checks

Check the layouts, your room, your doors, the connection system and the comfort specs, in that order.

  1. Count the real layouts. Ask which layouts this exact sofa can make with the pieces in the box. Photos or plans should show each one.
  2. Measure the room for your biggest layout. Tape the footprint on the floor and leave about 30 in of walkway around it.
  3. Measure your doors against the largest box, not against the sofa.
  4. Check how the pieces hold together: connectors, buckles or an anti-slip base.
  5. Read the comfort specs: seat depth, foam and fabric. Deep seats suit lounging; firmer foam suits sitting upright.

Frequently asked questions

Is a modular sofa the same as a sectional?

Not always. A sectional is any sofa made in sections, often an L or a U, and many sectionals only go together one way. A modular sofa is a sectional whose pieces are designed to be rearranged into more than one layout.

Do modular sofa pieces slide apart?

They can on smooth floors if nothing holds them. Look for a connection system: our Tufted Corduroy Modular Loveseat with Ottoman, for example, has an anti-slip base and a buckle connection that help keep the pieces from shifting.

Are modular sofas comfortable?

Comfort depends on the seat depth, the foam and the fabric, not on the fact that the sofa is modular. Check those three specs on each sofa page; the deep layouts, like a daybed or a chaise, are often the most comfortable way to lounge.

Do modular sofas need assembly?

It depends on the model. Several of our modular sofas need no assembly at all: you unbox the pieces and push them together. Others, like our Chenille Modular 4-Seat Sofa, need some assembly with every tool included in the packages.

Can I add pieces to a modular sofa later?

Some brands sell single modules. At Lakely each sofa ships as a complete set, and every layout we show uses only the pieces that come in the box, so you know exactly what you can build on day one.

How long does a modular sofa take to arrive?

Lakely sofas ship free from a US warehouse and arrive in 3 to 5 days. Compressed models then need from about 72 hours to 7 days to reach full size, depending on the model.
